Entry Fees: Solos: $20.00 per solo; Duets: $20.00 per student for each duet; Ensembles: $10.00 per student for each ensemble. When you fill out your entry form online, these fees will be calculated automatically.
Payment: You must pay with a Credit Card (Mastercard, Visa, or Discover) when you enter on-line or send a check for total amount to Geneva Chamber of Commerce. Entries will not be processed until payment is made.
No Refunds: Call Denise at 630-346-2605 if you need to make a substitution. Committee reserves the right to determine if substitution is possible.
ABSOLUTELY NO PREFERENTIAL TIME WILL BE ASSIGNED. If there are two or more children in a family or a child is entered in more than one event, please plan on spending the whole day at the competition. We cannot schedule events close together for convenience.
Deadline: Entry deadline is June 1, 2010. If the limit is reached before that date, the registrations will be closed. After the deadline, the committee reserves the right to close registrations at any time.
LEVELS AND CLASSIFICATIONS—SOLO DIVISIONS ONLY
LEVELS
OLYMPIC LEVEL : This level is open to advanced performers of all ages who have successfully competed in the Concert level previously and/or meet the requirements for the Olympic class. Students entering this class should be playing standard repertoire appropriate for such competitions as the CSO Young Artist Competition, the Naumberg Foundation Competition and other nationally recognized competitions. We trust the judgment of the teacher. However, if there is a question, please submit the title(s) of the entry(ies) to granquistmusic@genevachamber.com and we will review the material and respond to you. Music must be memorized. Five point penalty if you use your music. Top winners in each class will go on to play in a final concert which will be held on Sunday, July 11, 2010 at 7:00 pm at the First Baptist Church of Geneva, 2300 South St, Geneva, Il. 60134. . At that time, the top three winners will be selected and Scholarship monies awarded.
CONCERT LEVEL: is open to students of all ages as listed in the registration forms. Music must be memorized (five point penalty if you use your music) and the top scores (by judges decision) receive trophies.
PERFORMANCE LEVEL: is open to students of all ages as listed on the registration forms. Memorization is not required at this level. Top three scores receive First, Second, or Third Place Ribbons. Participants at all three levels receive verbal and written adjudication designed to educate the student in music and performance.
CLASSIFICATIONS SOLOS: Accordion, Bells, Brass, Drum-Rudimental (snare or field), Drum-Combo-Improv (outline of music), Drum-Combo-Classical (all music written out) (drum-sets), Guitar, Marimba, Organ-Spinet, Piano, Strings, Timpani, Voice-Classical, Voice-Pop, Winds. Soloists may perform in only one level in each classification unless listed differently under special options.
SPECIAL OPTIONS: If you are a vocal contestant, you may perform at two levels; one level for Classical and one level for Pop. Olympic is Classical only. Brass, Wind or String contestants could perform at three levels as long as it is a different instrument at each level, e.g., you could play clarinet at one level, flute at another level, and piccolo at a third level (all in the wind family). Brass & Strings would be the same as long as you perform on a different instrument in each level.
Once you have entered a specific level of competition, you may not change unless the committee agrees to the change.
LEVELS & CLASSIFICATIONS—DUETS AND ENSEMBLES
There is only one level of competition for duets and ensembles. Music does not
need to be memorized. There is no penalty for using your music. If you choose to memorize your music you may, although you do not receive extra points for memorization.
Contestants may performer in only one duet in each classification and in one ensemble in each classification.
AGE & LENGTH OF INSTRUCTION
Age of Contestant is determined by their age as of June 30th of this year. For duets and ensembles take the average age of both or all performers as of June 30th of this year.
For all solos, duet, and ensembles for piano and instrumental, performers must be at least four years old as of June 30th of this year.
All vocal performers must be at least eight years old as of June 30th of this year
All levels and classifications are open to adults (18 years and up).
Length of instruction must include total instruction from all teachers on the specified instrument and all like instruments, e.g., organ, keyboard, and piano are all like instruments; violin, viola, cello, and bass are all like instruments, etc.
You must move up one year of instruction every year even if you do not take lessons over the summer.
TIME LIMIT ON PERFORMANCE
Time limit is determined by length of instruction for all solo performances in the
Concert level and Performance level and all duets.
Under 1 year to 1 year/11 months- 3 minutes
2 years to 2 years/11 months- 3 ½ minutes
3 years to 3 years/11 months-4 minutes
4 years to 4 years/11months- 5 minutes
5 years to 5 years/11months-6 minutes
6 years to 6 years/11 months-7 minutes
7 years and over -10minutes
ONLY ONE SELECTION FOR EACH PERFORMANCE—Time limit given is the maximum time—you do not have to play a selection that is the full time limit. It can be shorter if you wish. Please list length of the selection accurately.
ALL MUSIC MUST HAVE ALL MEASURES NUMBERED. Failure to do so will result in a one point deduction.
MUSIC MUST BE GIVEN TO THE ROOM CAPTAIN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CLASS. (NO PHOTOCOPIES) FAILURE TO PROVIDE MUSIC WILL RESULT IN AN AUTOMATIC FIVE POINT DEDUCTION.
NO TAPED ACCOMPANIMENTS FOR ANY INSTRUMENTAL OR VOCAL SOLOS.
ACCORDION—No Amplified accordion solos.
BRASS, STRINGS, WINDS: Piano available for accompaniment. No penalty if unaccompanied.
GUITAR—Amplifier is provided. Music must be in standard notation (no tablature). Improvisation or ad-lib chorus must be designated by measures with rhythmic style and chord progression specifically noted.
ORGAN—Spinet organ only. One point penalty if contestant does not wear shoes. Two point penalty if organ music does not have a complete three-stave score or a two stave score with proper pedal notation. The contestant is responsible for setting organ stops. A card with settings for the organ may be used. Younger students may be assisted with the registration if needed. No rhythm settings are to be used.
ENSEMBLES, BOTH INSTRUMENTAL & VOCAL—Must have a complete score with measures numbered. Music must be scored for all instruments or voicings that are in the group.
PERCUSSION—Marimba and Timpani are provided. All other drums and equipment must be provided by the student. Drums performers should be at the site early so you can set up your drums before your class starts. Watch for information as to when you should arrive.
MUSIC STANDS will be provided in all rooms that have duets or ensembles.
HANDBELL CHOIR – Handbells, tables, pads and mallets will NOT be provided.
SCHEDULING PROCEDURES
The contest committee reserves the right to combine classes.
Make a hard copy of your master form. Be sure to check ages, birth dates, and length of instruction with your parents before you send in your form. Changes in the schedule after it is set make the rooms run behind. It’s your responsibility to send us the correct information the first time. Thanks for your cooperation in advance.
Schedules will hopefully be e-mailed the first week in June. Check your schedules and labels immediately for any errors. Please send on e-mail or call Denise at 630-346-2605 if you find any errors.
COMPETITION PROCEDURES
Teachers are responsible for providing students with the following information.
Students must bring their own instruments, equipment, and music unless stated otherwise in the rules. Student label must be attached to the music. Student is responsible for reclaiming their music at the end of the class and for picking up their trophy or ribbon. If student forgets trophy or ribbon, it will be mailed at the students expense.
STUDENTS SHOULD BE DRESSED IN CONCERT ATTIRE—any student not well dressed will have a deduction from their score. They should dress neatly as they would for a dress concert at school. No blue jeans, t-shirts, shorts, tank tops, short skirts or dresses or tennis shoes.
MUSIC MUST BE PLAYED AS WRITTEN ON THE SCORE—any deviations
must be neatly and legibly noted on the music. No repeats permitted in the music unless it is a D.C. or a D.S. al fine. Judge may stop the student if they exceed the time limit.
THE JUDGES DECISION IS FINAL ! Judging is based on overall performance
(playing all notes, rhythms, dynamics, and fingerings as marked in the music), memorization, technique, posture, conduct, and appearance. Judges will have the option of awarding up to five points for difficulty of music. Scores will not be changed unless the committee finds an error by the judge or an infraction of the rules and regulations.
CONTESTANT DISQUALIFICATION—Any harassment of a judge by a parent, performer, or anyone who is associated with that performer at any time during the competition shall result in immediate disqualification and any awards forthcoming will be forfeited. If there is a problem with a score or you feel there has been and infraction or the rules, you must contact a committee member the day of the competition. If you wait until after the competition we cannot correct a mistake.
The contest site is handicapped accessible. Please have someone at an information table contact a custodian to assist you.
